NEWS 121205: A new 3.7 kernel for MeX Linux 64bit and other Ubuntu 64bit systems
I have compiled yet another 3.7 kernel for Ubuntu 12.10, ExTiX 11 64bit, MeX Linux or Linux Mint 11, 12, 13 and 14. The full name of the new kernel is 3.7.0-5-exton_3.7.0-5.13_amd64. It is the same as Kernel.org’s kernel 3.7-rc8 released 121203. You can install the kernel in any Ubuntu 64bit System. See below how to do it.
A better kernel
Nothing is so good that it can not be improved (as the saying goes). This also applies to “my” compiled Ubuntu kernels. A disadvantage of my (former) Ubuntu kernels was that you could not install such packages as VirtualBox or Nvidia’s proprietary drivers, which require kernel sources at installation. I have now discovered a better way to compile the kernel, which includes absolutely all specific Ubuntu patches. The above mentioned problem is thus solved in kernel 3.7.0-5-exton (3.7-rc8). It is now possible to install VirtualBox and proprietary hardware drivers with only kernel-headers-3.7.0-5-exton installed. Ie full kernel sources are not needed.
A. Get the kernel: linux-image-3.7.0-5-exton_3.7.0-5.13_amd64.deb
B. Get kernel-headers-exton: linux-headers-3.7.0-5-exton_3.7.0-5.13_amd64.deb
C. Get kernel-headers-all: linux-headers-3.7.0-5_3.7.0-5.13_all.deb
Install command: sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.7.0-5_3.7.0-5.13_all.deb linux-headers-3.7.0-5-exton_3.7.0-5.13_amd64.deb linux-image-3.7.0-5-exton_3.7.0-5.13_amd64.deb
Then: Run command sudo update-grub (if you use Grub 2)
A small clarification
“My” kernel 3.7.0-5-exton is compiled exactly the same way as all official Ubuntu kernels. That is, The Ubuntu Way. If not, the kernel would not function in an Ubuntu system.

Hi, Exton, is it possible to compile the kernel with the Realtec RTL2832U driver?
I guess so, but I’m not sure. (Difficult to know without trying).
Hi, Exton…. There seems to be a problem with the NVIDIA drivers and your current kernel with the 3.7-rc8. Do you required the kernel sources to compile the dkms NVIDIA driver?

Not on my computers…
Try the command nvidia-xconfig. If it works (you’ll get a new /etc/X11/xorg.conf) you will know that everything is ok.
You can also reinstall the NVIDIA driver. Perhaps a newer version. The thing is that with “my” kernel you will only need the kernel-headers (which already are installed) to do so.
You should get the driver from here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-amd64-310.19-driver.html (not from Ubuntu’s repositories).

Well, I guess I could, but there’s no point doing it (I think).
1st download link is faulty… downloading it for 4th time.. and still i am not able to download full image. firefox shows download completed before actually completing the download.
Are you by any chance working on a kernel 3.7 live distro release? I could really use one. I tried your LFA, but the rc8 kernel seems to have some weird bug in the device mapper, and it’s also a bit to heavyweight for my old system.
