WHAT’S NEW IN VERSION 140104?
1. ExLight is now based on upcoming Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr 64 bit (to be released in a stable version in April 2014).
2. ExLight’s ISO file is now a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred (copied) to a USB pen drive. You can then even run ExLight from the USB stick and save all your system changes on the stick. I.e. you will enjoy persistence! I’ve found two scripts which make the installation to USB very simple. The scripts are quite ingenious. Unfortunately, it is not me who have created them. I found the scripts on Kanotix website. There was no direct indication of how good the scripts were, but my tests show that they work flawlessly on USB installations of all normal Ubuntu systems. Read my INSTRUCTION how to use the scripts.
3. Another big improvement is that ExLight 14.04 can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 2 (Copy to RAM). When the system has booted up you can remove the disc (DVD) or USB stick. You’ll need at least 2 GB RAM to run ExLight that way.
4. All your computer partitions will be mounted automatically on Ubuntu’s Desktop readable and writable. If you don’t like that delete the file /etc/udev/10-exlight-automount.rules (after a hard drive install of ExLight).
ExLight 14.04 Linux Live DVD is a remaster of Ubuntu 14.04 (alias Trusty Tahr, to be released in April, 2014). The Desktop Environment is Mate 1.6.0. (A fork of GNOME 2. It provides an intuitive and attractive desktop environment using traditional metaphors for Linux and other Unix-like operating systems). Kernel 3.12.0-7-exton is used. (Kernel.org‘s stable kernel 3.12.4, released 131209). Program content: AbiWord, SpaceFM, Firefox, Gimp, Vlc and GParted. Also all necessary additions in order to install programs from source. Study the full program LIST. All programs have been updated to the latest available version as at January 4, 2014. The system language is English.
The importance of ExLight now being based on a development version of Ubuntu
I do not think the matter is so important, because ExLight uses the Desktop environment Mate 1.6.0, which is in principle equivalent to “old-fashioned” Gnome 2. During my test runs of Exlight 14.04 I have not discovered any “bugs”.
Who can benefit from ExLight 14.04?
All who like Ubuntu and want to be at the forefront. In addition, anyone who wants to run a Linux system live (from DVD/USB) really fast. (ExLight 14.04 can thus run from RAM).
