DebEX Barebone 64 bit Live DVD with LXDE and kernel 3.13.1-amd64

About
The system is a based on Debian Jessie (upcoming Debian 8).
There are also certain elements of Debian Sid (unstable). LXDE is used as Desktop environment. “The Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment (LXDE) is an extremely fast-performing and energy-saving desktop environment“. DebEX Barebone uses the original Debian kernel 3.13.1-amd64. The system language is English.

NEWS 140227
The DebEX Barebone ISO is now a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred to a USB pen drive. You can then even run DebEX Barebone from the USB stick and save all your system changes on the stick. I.e. you will enjoy persistence! Read this INSTRUCTION. NetworkManager has been removed. It doesn’t go together with Wicd when it comes to configuring wireless networks. I’ve added the applications GParted (partition editor), AbiWord, Icedove (Thunderbird) and AlsaPlayer. Study the full PACKAGE LIST of 140227. The biggest improvement in version 140227 of DebEX Barebone is that DebEX Installer now work flawlessly. Another big improvement is that DebEX Barebone now can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 2 (Copy to RAM). When the system has booted up you can remove the disc (DVD) or USB stick. You’ll need at least 1024 MB RAM to run from RAM.

Exton|OS 64 bit Live DVD with Mate 1.6.2 and kernel 3.13.0-9-exton

Exton|OS is based on upcoming Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit (to be released in a stable version in April 2014) and Debian Jessie. Exton|OS’s ISO file a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred (copied) to an USB pen drive. You can then even run Exton|OS from the USB stick and save all your system changes on the stick. I.e. you will enjoy persistence! I’ve found two scripts which make the installation to USB very simple. The scripts are quite ingenious. My tests show that they work flawlessly on USB installations of all normal Ubuntu systems. Read my INSTRUCTION how to use the scripts.

Runs from RAM
Another great thing is that Exton|OS can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 2 (Copy to RAM). When the system has booted up you can remove the disc (DVD) or USB stick. You’ll need at least 2 GB RAM to run Exton|OS that way.

Desktop Environment
The Desktop Environment is Mate 1.6.2. (A fork of GNOME 2. It provides an intuitive and attractive desktop environment using traditional metaphors for Linux and other Unix-like operating systems). Kernel 3.13.0-9-exton is used. (Kernel.org’s stable kernel 3.13.3, released 140213). Program content: Firefox, Gimp, Vlc and GParted. Also all necessary additions in order to install programs from source. All packages have been updated to the latest available version as at February 25, 2014. Study the full package list.

Why use Linux?

I found something memorable about Linux on the Internet. I reproduce it here. The author is unknown to me.

: () {  : | : & } ; :

We tell people we use Linux because it’s secure. Or because it’s free, because it’s customizable, because it’s free (the other meaning), because it has excellent community support…

But all that is just marketing bullshit. We tell that to non-Linuxers because the wouldn’t understand the real reason. And when we say those false reasons enough, we might even start to believe them ourselves.

But deep underneth, the real reson remains.

We use Linux because it’s fun.

It’s fun to tinker with your system. It’s fun to change all the settings, break the system, then have to go to recovery mode to repair it. It’s fun to have over a hundred distros to choose from. It’s fun to use the command line.

Let me say that again. It’s fun to use the command line.

No wonder non-Linuxers wouldn’t understand.

The point with Linux fans is we use Linux for its own sake. Sure, we like to get work done. Sure, we like to be secure from viruses. Sure, we like to save money. But those are only the side effects. What we really like is playing with the system, poking around, and discovering fascinating facts about the software that lies underneath it.

EXTON Linux

exGENT 2014 (Gentoo) 32 bit with Gnome 3.10 and kernel 3.13.2-gentoo-exton

GentooNEWS 20140212
I’ve made yet a new version (140212) of exGENT 2014. Now with Gnome 3.10. It is for the 32 bit architecture. I call it exGENT 2014 Gnome Live DVD. It replaces version 20130423 of exGENT, which had Cinnamon as Desktop environment. Cinnamon is no longer “needed” since Gnome version 3.10 has everything that Cinnamon has (and more). Version 140212 of exGENT uses kernel 3.13.2. (The latest stable kernel from Kernel.org). Study the LIST of all installed packages.

See a screenshot of the Gnome 3.10 Desktop.

Who is exGENT/Gentoo for?
My answer: Experienced Linux users or those who really want to learn Linux. (Perhaps also for people who are bored with mainstream distributions like Ubuntu).

Three different servers
This means among other things that the above mentioned distributions now are available from three (3) different independent servers. Namely The Swedish Linux Society, Sourceforge.net and Softpedia.com. So now I am guarded for all eventualities. On the other hand, the title is a bit misleading. The correct title would read “Three different Download places” or if you include LINUX.EXTON.NETFour different Download places.” If you click on the blue Download button on Softpedias different pages you will in fact be linked to Sourceforge.net. (The aforementioned applies not only to my Linux distributions). Now there are only three exton distributions (out of sixteen), on just the one (1) server – The Swedish Linux Society. These three are: KNOPPIX-EXTON v7.0.4 32bit Linux Live DVDPCLinuxOS-EXTON 2013 32bit Linux Live DVD and EXTON-MAN 2014 (Mageia 4) 32bit LXDE Live CD. The two first mentioned have in common that the system language is Swedish.

GentooNEWS 140210
I’ve made yet a new version (20140210) of exGENT 2014. This time for the 32 bit architecture. The new version (140210 of 1080 MB) uses LXDE as Desktop environment (as my previous 64 bit version from 140207). All installed packages in exGENT have been updated to the latest available version by 140210.

NEWS 20140207

I’ve made yet a new version (20140207) of exGENT 2014. This time for the 64 bit architecture. The new version (release 140207 of 1090 MB) uses LXDE as Desktop environment. Used kernel: 3.13.1-gentoo-exton. Kernel 3.13.1 is the second latest stable kernel available from Kernel.org. All installed packages in exGENT have been updated to the latest available version by 140207.

Feature OVERVIEW for the Linux 3.13 kernel

Features
You’ll run exGENT super fast in RAM. The launch from the dvd becomes a little slow, but then… A wonderful way to run Linux if you have enough RAM. You’ll need at least 2 GB. exGENT Linux can be installed to hard drive in 3 – 10 min. (Depending on computer type). This means that all of you who might hesitate to perform a normal Gentoo installation – which can take up to a couple of days – now have the chance to get this great Linux system (Gentoo) installed on your computers very easy.

Who is exGENT/Gentoo for?
My answer: Experienced Linux users or those who really want to learn Linux. (Perhaps also for people who are bored with mainstream distributions like Ubuntu).

EXTON-MAN 2014 (Mageia 4) 32 bit Linux live cd with LXDE

SlackwareI’ve made a quick and simple remaster of Mageia 4, released 140201. Mageia has been the third most popular Linux system in the world for some time now (according to Distrowatch.com).

History
Since Mageia (from the beginning) is based on Mandriva, I have decided to call my new remaster EXTON-MAN 2014, in line with my previous remasters of Mandriva, for example EXTON-MAN 2010 from 091123. I have also previously done three remasters of Mageia. Mageia 1 from 111111, Mageia 2 of 120930 and Mageia 3 of 130524. They were called EXTON-MAN 32bit 2011, EXTON-MAN 32bit 2012 respectively EXTON-MAN 64bit 2013 .

My changes of Mageia 4
I have removed the KDE Desktop environment and installed LXDE instead. KDE is a bit slow when running Mageia live. (I.e. from CD/USB). Study the full list of installed packages. The system language is ENGLISH. My previous remasters of Mageia were in Swedish.

Log in to LXDE
When EXTON-MAN has booted up you will end up at Slim‘s login manager. First press F1. It will look like this. Then log in to LXDE as user live or as root. Passwords: live/root.

Installation to hard disk
EXTON-MAN/Mageia can easily be installed to hard disk. Just follow the instructions.

Installation to an USB stick
The EXTON-MAN/Mageia ISO is a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred (copied) to an USB pen drive. You can use two different commands.

1) cp exton-man-2014-32bit-lxde-664mb-140203.iso /dev/sdc
or
2) dd if=exton-man-2014-32bit-lxde-664mb-140203.iso of=/dev/sdc

Where sdc is the usbkey. Replace by yours (/dev/sdb for example), not sdb1. That’s all! Normally it works with any Linux distribution which include a decent/recent version of syslinux.

USB installations in Windows
Unfortunately it’s not possible to perform an USB installation of Mageia 4/EXTON-MAN 2014 in Windows using any “Live USB System Creator” (including UNetbootin). Believe me, I’ve tried them all!

How do I install new programs?
Please read Mageia’s Wiki Installing and removing software.

Who is EXTON-MAN 2014 32 bit LXDE for?
There is no official live Mageia 4 ISO with LXDE for downloading. (Only with KDE and Gnome). EXTON-MAN 2014 can be useful for people with older 32 bit computers who like to run an eminent Linux system (Mageia) live with some speed. Also of course for all people with computers with low RAM.

See this screenshot of the LXDE Desktop

The ISO file (exton-man-2014-32bit-lxde-664mb-140203.iso) can be downloaded from the Swedish Linux Society.
