ExLight Linux Live DVD 64 bit with Enlightenment 0.19.1 and kernel 3.18.0-10-exton

WHAT’S NEW IN VERSION 150126?
1. ExLight is now based on upcoming Ubuntu 15.04 (alias Vivid Vervet) and Debian Jessie.
2. I have upgraded the Desktop environment Enlightenment (Beauty at your fingertips) to version 0.19.1.
3. I have replaced kernel 3.16.0-21-exton with kernel 3.18.0-10-exton.
4. ExLight’s ISO file is now a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred (copied) to a USB pen drive. You can then even run ExLight from the USB stick and save all your system changes on the stick. I.e. you will enjoy persistence! I’ve found two scripts which make the installation to USB very simple. The scripts are quite ingenious. My tests show that they work flawlessly on USB installations of all normal Ubuntu systems. Read my INSTRUCTION how to use the scripts.
5. Another big improvement is that ExLight can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 3 (Copy to RAM). When the system has booted up you can remove the disc (DVD) or USB stick. You’ll need at least 2 GB RAM to run ExLight that way.
6. The installation program Ubiquity (live installer) is now working as intended in ExLight version 150126. I.e. a new user (your user) will be created during the installation process.
7. I have installed Nvidia Graphic driver 346.35.
8. The ISO file has decreased in size from 1200 MB to 768 MB. It means that the system will run faster from DVD or USB stick. When you run ExLight from RAM everything will be superfast!

Installed packages
The Desktop Environment is Enlightenment 0.19.1. (Beauty at your fingertips). Kernel 3.18.0-10-exton is used. (Kernel.org‘s kernel 3.18.3). Program content: Synaptic, AbiWord, GParted, Wicd, PCManFM, Google Chrome (for watching Netflix movies) and Gimp. Also some additions in order to install programs from source. Study the full program LIST. All packages have been updated to the latest available version as at January 26, 2015.

The system language is English.

Run your Ubuntu/Debian 64 bit system with the latest stable kernel – 3.18.3

TuxI have compiled yet another Ubuntu/Debian kernel for 64 bit systems. This time kernel 3.18.0-10-exton, equivalent to Kernel.org’s stable kernel 3.18.3, released 150116.

Feature OVERVIEW for the Linux 3.18 kernel

Install kernel 3.18.0-10-exton in Ubuntu/Debian based distributions
My self-compiled Ubuntu kernels can be used in all types of modern Ubuntu systems, including Mint. They can even be used in Debian Jessie (upcoming Debian 8?). If you want to use my kernel 3.18.0-10-exton for 64 bit systems, you can DOWNLOAD it from here.

md5sum for ubuntu-kernel-64bit-3.18.0-10-exton.zip, which is of 61,4 MB.

Installation instructions
Open the zip-file with WinZip, WinRAR or 7-Zip. Or run this command: unzip ubuntu-kernel-64bit-3.18.0-10-exton.zip. Go into the folder ubuntu-kernel-64bit-3.18.0-10-exton and run this command:
sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.18.0-10_3.18.0-10.11_all.deb \
linux-headers-3.18.0-10-exton_3.18.0-10.11_amd64.deb\
linux-image-3.18.0-10-exton_3.18.0-10.11_amd64.deb

Then: Run command sudo update-grub (if you use Grub2).

Nvidia
It is possible to install Nvidia’s proprietary drivers if you use “my” kernel 3.18.0-10-exton. Could be useful if you like to play games. Please read this instruction. The Nvidia drivers in for example Ubuntu’s repositories – “Current” etc. – can’t be used. It is supposed to be “impossible” to install Nvidia’s latest drivers when running kernel 3.16 – 3.18 without “patches” etc.

A small clarification
“My” kernel 3.18.0-10-exton is compiled exactly the same way as all official Ubuntu kernels. That is, The Ubuntu Way. If not, the kernel would not function in a Ubuntu/Debian system.

Good luck!

DebEX Gnome 64 bit with Gnome 3.14, Mate 1.8.2 and kernel 3.18.0-8-exton

DebianNEWS 150122
I have made a new version of DebEX 64 bit Gnome Live DVD. It replaces version 141014. It’s a pure Debian system. It uses Gnome 3.14 and Mate 1.8.2 as Desktop environments. Gnome 3.14 is winning back disillusioned Linux users. I have installed Nvidia’s proprietary graphic driver 340.65 in this new version of DebEX. Furthermore Google Chrome to make it possible to watch Netflix movies. All other installed packages have also been updated to the latest version as of 150122.

DebEX is based on Debian Jessie (upcoming Debian 8). There are also certain elements of Debian Sid (unstable).

CruxEX 3.1 64 bit Linux Live CD/USB with kernel 3.18.3-x86_64-cruxex

CruxEX 3.1 64 bit Linux Live CD/USB is based on CRUX 3.1 (latest version, released 140716), which is all Linux enthusiasts/nerds favorite OS. (CRUX 3.1 is a lightweight Linux distribution for the x86-64 architecture targeted at experienced Linux users). CruxEX 3.1 2015 uses the LXDE Desktop environment. I have replaced the original CRUX kernel with “my” special kernel 3.18.3-x86_64-cruxex, with support for “extra everything”.

Kernel etc
Kernel 3.18.3 is the latest available stable kernel as of 150119. Among all installed and updated applications are Firefox 38.0 (Nightly), Gimp 2.8.14 and Wicd. I have also included Nvidia Graphic driver 346.35. It has support for the following GPUs: GeForce 800A, GeForce 800M, GeForce GTX 970M and GeForce GTX 980M. Furthermore compilation tools so that you can install programs from source.

MORE NEWS 150119
CruxEX 2015 is distributed both as an ISO file and a Zip file. Install my new version of CruxEX 3.1 64bit from 150119 to a USB Pen Drive and save your system changes – read this INSTRUCTION. If you later on decide you want to install CruxEX to hard drive from the USB Pen Drive all your system changes will also be installed to the hard drive. Or burn the ISO file to a CD and run CruxEX live the “normal” way. Mainly the ISO file is for all of you who like to run and test Linux systems in VirtualBox (before installing the systems to hard drive).

Unique
CruxEX 3.1 2015 build 150119 is – as my previous CRUX-remasters – unique in the world. I.e. there is no other CRUX Live CD/USB in any language (as far as I know). In any case, not for downloading.

DebEX build 150116 with KDE 14.4.2 and kernel 3.18.0-7-exton

DebianNEWS 150116
I have made a new version of DebEX KDE Live DVD. It replaces version 141216. It’s a pure Debian 8 system. I.e.: There are no Ubuntu or Kubuntu elements involved. DebEX KDE uses KDE 4.14.2 as Desktop environment. (The second latest stable version of KDE) and kernel 3.18.0-7-exton. I have installed Nvidia’s proprietary graphic driver 340.65. Furthermore Google Chrome to make it possible to watch Netflix movies. All other installed packages have also been updated to the latest version of 150116. Study the full package list.

Runs from RAM
DebEX KDE can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 2 (Copy to RAM). When the system has booted up you can remove the disc (DVD) or USB stick. You’ll need at least 2GB RAM to run DebEX from RAM.

About Nvidia’s proprietary graphic driver 340.65 in DebEX Barebone Xfce4 version 150114 and KDE version 150116
If you can and want to use said driver you’ll have to leave X/Xfce4/KDE by pressing Ctrl Alt F1. Log in as root with password root. Then run the command nvidia-xconfig (to create /etc/X11/xorg.conf). Then run startx to enter X/Xfce4/KDE again. You will notice a big difference if you have the right (modern/new) Nvidia card. On certain computers you can’t leave X by pressing Ctrl Alt F1. In that case you can only use said driver after a hard drive installation of DebEX. Then run the command nvidia-xconfig and restart your computer.
