Install a Linux system to a USB stick and get perfect persistence!

cropped-cropped-2038729-1920x1080-small.jpgLinux to USB – Installation methods
Many people like to run/test a Linux system without touching/changing their hard drive. There are a lot of installations programs out there for both Linux and Windows. Most of them doesn’t offer persistence though. Very little is written about the fact that the “ordinary” installation program for installations to hard drive (in some cases) also can be used to install a Linux system to a USB stick. Using such an installation method will of course give you perfect persistence! Here are some examples.

1. ExTiX – based on Ubuntu
Installation with perfect persistence using the regular installation program Ubiquity. Read about how to do it (under B)).

2. exGENT – based on Gentoo Linux
Installation with perfect persistence using a script, which I call exGENT Installer. It is done in the same way as a hard drive installation. Read more…

3. SlackEX – based on Slackware
SlackEX has to be installed to a USB Stick. Read about how to do it. It can be done i Windows or Linux.

4. CruxEX – based on CRUX
Please read my INSTRUCTION for CruxEX. It can be done i Windows or Linux.

5. EXTON OpSuS – based on openSUSE
EXTON OpSuS has to be installed to a USB stick. It can be done i Windows or Linux. Read about how to do it.

6. ArchEX – based on Arch Linux
Please read my INSTRUCTION. All your system changes will be saved directly on the stick.

ExTiX 16.3 LXQt DVD 64 bit – Build 160530 – with LXQt 0.10.0 and kernel 4.6.0-extix

extix-logo-black-white-bgI have made a new version of ExTiX – The Ultimate Linux System. I call it ExTiX 16.3 LXQt Live DVD. (The previous version was 16.1).

ABOUT
ExTiX 16.3
LXQt DVD 64 bit is based on Debian 8.4 Jessie/Debian 9 Stretch and Ubuntu 16.04. The original system includes the Desktop Environment Unity (Ubuntu). After removing Unity I have installed LXQt 0.10.0. LXQt is the Qt port and the upcoming version of LXDE, the Lightweight Desktop Environment. It is the product of the merge between the LXDE-Qt and the Razor-qt projects: A lightweight, modular, blazing-fast and user-friendly desktop environment. All packages have been updated to the latest version by 160530.

The system language is ENGLISH.

Used KERNEL
My special kernel 4.6.0-extix corresponding Kernel.org’s kernel 4.6. It’s the latest stable kernel as of now. Ubuntu 16.04 uses kernel 4.4.

What’s new in kernel 4.6?

NVIDIA
I have pre-installed the Nvidia proprietary Graphics driver 361.45.11 in ExTiX LXQt. It has support for the following GPUs: Quadro K1200, Quadro M6000, GeForce 920M, GeForce 930A, GeForce 930M, GeForce 940M, GeForce GTX 950M, GeForce GTX 960M and GeForce GTX TITAN X. This driver will be used automatically if your card is supported.

ExTiX 15.1 64 bit is ready!

ExTiXExTiX Linux Live DVD 64 bit is based on Debian Jessie/Ubuntu 14.10. The original system includes the Desktop Environment Unity (Ubuntu). After removing Unity I have installed Gnome 3.14 (in ExTiX 15.1, build 150104) respectively Razor-qt 0.5.2 (in ExTiX Light, build 141019). The system language is English in both versions of ExTiX.

NEWS ABOUT ExTiX 15.1 build 150104
1. ExTiX Gnome is now based on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn. Gnome has been upgraded to version 3.14. (Not in Ubuntu’s repositories). All packages have been updated to the latest version by 150104. Kernel 3.16.0-21-exton is used. (Kernel.org‘s kernel 3.16.4).
2. Google Chrome is included, which makes it possible to watch Netflix movies. It is not possible in Firefox (in Linux).
3. I have also installed BlueGriffon Web Editor. BlueGriffon is a new WYSIWYG content editor for the World Wide Web. Powered by Gecko, the rendering engine of Firefox, it’s a modern and robust solution to edit Web pages in conformance to the latest Web Standards. Only to be compared with Dreamweaver. (In my opinion).

What’s so special about ExTiX?

1. The ExTiX ISO (both versions) is a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred (copied) to a USB pen drive. You can then even run ExTiX from the USB stick and save all your system changes on the stick. I.e. you will enjoy persistence! I’ve found two scripts which make the installation to USB very simple. My tests show that they work flawlessly on USB installations of all normal Ubuntu systems. Read my INSTRUCTION how to use the scripts.
2. Another big improvement is that ExTiX (both versions) can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 3 (Copy to RAM). When the system has booted up you can remove the disc (DVD) or USB stick. You’ll need at least 2 GB RAM to run ExTiX that way.
3. ExTiX is now more stable than ever. All packages have been upgraded to the latest version by 150104 respectively 141019.
4. It is now possible to install Nvidia’s proprietary drivers in ExTiX if you want or need it. Please read this instruction.
5. I’ve also installed version 2.1.5 of Vlc (in version 141019 of ExTiX) from source to make it possible to run Vlc when logged in as root.
6. I’ve replaced kernel 3.16.0-5-exton with kernel 3.16.0-21-exton (Kernel.org‘s kernel 3.16.4) in both versions of ExTiX.
7. The installation program Ubiquity (live installer) is now working as intended in both versions of ExTiX. I.e. a new user (your user) will be created during the installation process.
