Install a Linux system to a USB stick and get perfect persistence!

cropped-cropped-2038729-1920x1080-small.jpgLinux to USB – Installation methods
Many people like to run/test a Linux system without touching/changing their hard drive. There are a lot of installations programs out there for both Linux and Windows. Most of them doesn’t offer persistence though. Very little is written about the fact that the “ordinary” installation program for installations to hard drive (in some cases) also can be used to install a Linux system to a USB stick. Using such an installation method will of course give you perfect persistence! Here are some examples.

1. ExTiX – based on Ubuntu
Installation with perfect persistence using the regular installation program Ubiquity. Read about how to do it (under B)).

2. exGENT – based on Gentoo Linux
Installation with perfect persistence using a script, which I call exGENT Installer. It is done in the same way as a hard drive installation. Read more…

3. SlackEX – based on Slackware
SlackEX has to be installed to a USB Stick. Read about how to do it. It can be done i Windows or Linux.

4. CruxEX – based on CRUX
Please read my INSTRUCTION for CruxEX. It can be done i Windows or Linux.

5. EXTON OpSuS – based on openSUSE
EXTON OpSuS has to be installed to a USB stick. It can be done i Windows or Linux. Read about how to do it.

6. ArchEX – based on Arch Linux
Please read my INSTRUCTION. All your system changes will be saved directly on the stick.

CruxEX (CRUX 3.2) Build 151128

cruxlogoNEWS ABOUT CruxEX Build 151128
To my horror I discovered that I had forgot to install the Graphics drivers VESA, ATI and VMware in Build 151125. They are now included in Build 151128. I’ve also finally discovered a way to install GParted in CRUX. GParted version 0.24.0 (latest) is now included in Build 151128. GParted is quite useful, wouldn’t you agree?

CruxEX (CRUX) 3.2 64bit Linux live cd/usb with kernel 4.3.0 and LXDE

CruxEX 3.2 64 bit Linux Live CD/USB is based on CRUX 3.2 (latest version, released 151123), which is all Linux enthusiasts/nerds favorite OS. (CRUX 3.2 is a lightweight Linux distribution for the x86-64 architecture targeted at experienced Linux users). CruxEX 3.2 2016 uses the LXDE Desktop environment. I have replaced the original CRUX kernel with “my” special kernel 4.3.0-x86_64-cruxex, with support for “extra everything”.

Kernel etc
Kernel 4.3.0 is the latest available stable kernel as of 151125. Among all installed and updated applications are Firefox, Gimp and Wicd. Furthermore compilation tools so that you can install programs from source.

NEWS 151125
CruxEX 2016 is distributed both as an ISO file and a Zip file. Install my new version of CruxEX 3.2 64bit from 151125 to a USB Pen Drive and save your system changes – read this INSTRUCTION. If you later on decide you want to install CruxEX to hard drive from the USB Pen Drive all your system changes will also be installed to the hard drive. Or burn the ISO file to a CD and run CruxEX live the “normal” way. Mainly the ISO file is for all of you who like to run and test Linux systems in VirtualBox (before installing the systems to hard drive).

Nvidia Graphics driver
I have also installed Nvidia Graphics driver 352.63 in this version of CruxEX. It has support for the following GPUs (among others): Quadro K1200, Quadro M6000, GeForce 920M, GeForce 930A, GeForce 930M, GeForce 940M, GeForce GTX 950M, GeForce GTX 960M and GeForce GTX TITAN X.

More about CruxEX 3.2 version 151125
All packages have been upgraded to the latest available version (with prt-get sysup). Furthermore: This version uses kernel 4.3.0 released 151102!

What’s new in kernel 4.3?

Unique
CruxEX 3.2 2016 build 151125 is – as my previous CRUX-remasters – unique in the world. I.e. there is no other CRUX Live CD/USB in any language (as far as I know). In any case, not for downloading.

ArchWHAT IS ArchEX dual build 150409?
ArchEX 64bit/32bit dual is a new (150409) Linux live DVD based on Arch Linux. Arch motto is KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid). ArchEX uses kernel 3.19.3-1-ARCH (latest stable kernel) and the LXDE Desktop environment.

INSTALLED SOFTWARE
Among many other programs, Firefox 37.0.1, Gimp 2.8.14, GCC 4.9.2, Wicd and GParted – see this package LIST.

INSTALLATION to hard drive
ArchEX can easily be installed to hard drive of those who so desire. Use ArchEX Installer. I.e. while running ArchEX live from the DVD.

Rolling distribution
Arch Linux/ArchEX are rolling distributions, which implies that once you have installed the system on the hard drive there is no need for re-installations (which otherwise is common in the Linux world).

DebEX Linux 64 bit with Gnome 3.14 and Mate 1.8.2

DebianI have made a new extra version of DebEX, which I call DebEX Gnome Live DVD. It’s a pure Debian system. It uses Gnome 3.14 (latest version) and Mate 1.8.2 (latest version) as Desktop environments. Gnome 3.14 is winning back disillusioned Linux users…

About DebEX Barebone, DebEX Gnome and DebEX KDE Linux 64 bit
All three systems/distros are a based on Debian Jessie (upcoming Debian 8). There are also certain elements of Debian Sid (unstable). Xfce 4.10.1 is used as Desktop environment in DebEX Barebone. It aims to be fast and low on system resources, while still being visually appealing and user friendly. Gnome 3.14 is used in DebEX Gnome. KDE 4.13.3 is used in DebEX KDE. DebEX Barebone uses the original Debian kernel 3.14.2-amd64 (equivalent to Kernel.org’s stable kernel 3.14.2. DebEX Gnome uses the original Debian kernel 3.16.3-amd64 (equivalent to Kernel.org’s stable kernel 3.16.3). DebEX KDE uses “my” special kernel 3.16.0-7-exton equivalent to Kernel.org’s stable kernel 3.16. The system language is English (in all three versions of DebEX).

Exton|OS Light Live CD 64 bit with Openbox 3.5.2 :: build 140524

NEWS 140524 about Exton|OS Light Live CD – ISO file of 625 MB
I’ve made a new extra version of Exton|OS with only a minimum of packages pre-installed. Among them a terminal emulator (LXTerminal), a Web Browser (Chromium), PCManFM (file manager), NetworkManager and Synaptic (Package Manager). I give you the pleasure of installing all extra packages you need after a hard disk installation of Exton|OS Light. Use Synaptic for that. You can of course also install new packages while running the system live (from CD/USB stick), but nothing will be saved after a reboot. Unless you have followed my USB Install Instruction and used Boot alternative 2 – Persistent. If you have plenty of RAM you can even install big programs (such as LibreOffice) while running the system live even from CD. Exton|OS Light’s Window manager Openbox guarantees lightness and elegance.

Exton|OS Light Live CD is based on Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit (released April 17, 2014) and Debian Jessie. Exton|OS Light’s ISO file (of 625 MB!) a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred (copied) to an USB pen drive. You can then even run Exton|OS from the USB stick and save all your system changes on the stick. I.e. you will enjoy persistence! I’ve found two scripts which make the installation to USB very simple. The scripts are quite ingenious. My tests show that they work flawlessly on USB installations of all normal Ubuntu systems. Read my INSTRUCTION how to use the scripts.

Runs from RAM
Another great thing is that Exton|OS/Exton|OS Light can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 2 (Copy to RAM). When the system has booted up you can remove the disc (CD) or USB stick. You’ll need at least 1 GB RAM to run Exton|OS Light that way. Since the system is relatively small (ISO file of 625 MB) Exton|OS will run really fast from RAM. Superfast I would say!

Exton|OS 64 bit with Mate 1.6.2 :: build 140415 :: (Ubuntu 14.04 in advance)

Exton|OS is based on upcoming Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit (to be released in a stable version April 26, 2014) and Debian Jessie. Exton|OS’s ISO file a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred (copied) to an USB pen drive.

NEWS 140415
A new and much better version of Exton|OS is ready. I have replaced kernel 3.13.0-17-exton with kernel 3.13.0-24-exton. (Kernel.org‘s stable kernel 3.13.9). I have also replaced Ubuntu’s installation program Ubiquity with Exton|OS Installer, which is a clone of Debian Live Installer. The installation to hard drive is now so simple that a 10 year old child can do it. Watch a SLIDESHOW of the hard drive installation process.

The importance of Exton|OS being based on a development version of Ubuntu and on Debian Jessie
I do not think the matter is so important, because Exton|OS uses the Desktop environment Mate (which is based on “old” Gnome 2). During my test runs of Exton|OS I have also not discovered any “bugs”. Furthermore: One could say that Exton|OS build 140415 is stable since the development of new features in upcoming Ubuntu 14.04 have been freezed for several weeks by now.

Exton|OS 64 bit Live DVD with Mate 1.6.2 and kernel 3.13.0-9-exton

Exton|OS is based on upcoming Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit (to be released in a stable version in April 2014) and Debian Jessie. Desktop Environment
The Desktop Environment is Mate 1.6.2. (A fork of GNOME 2. It provides an intuitive and attractive desktop environment using traditional metaphors for Linux and other Unix-like operating systems). Kernel 3.13.0-9-exton is used. (Kernel.org’s stable kernel 3.13.3, released 140213). Program content: Firefox, Gimp, Vlc and GParted. Also all necessary additions in order to install programs from source. All packages have been updated to the latest available version as at February 25, 2014. Study the full package list.

exGENT 2014 (Gentoo) 32 bit with Gnome 3.10 and kernel 3.13.2-gentoo-exton

GentooNEWS 20140212
I’ve made yet a new version (140212) of exGENT 2014. Now with Gnome 3.10. It is for the 32 bit architecture. I call it exGENT 2014 Gnome Live DVD. It replaces version 20130423 of exGENT, which had Cinnamon as Desktop environment. Cinnamon is no longer “needed” since Gnome version 3.10 has everything that Cinnamon has (and more). Version 140212 of exGENT uses kernel 3.13.2. (The latest stable kernel from Kernel.org). Study the LIST of all installed packages.

See a screenshot of the Gnome 3.10 Desktop.

Who is exGENT/Gentoo for?
My answer: Experienced Linux users or those who really want to learn Linux. (Perhaps also for people who are bored with mainstream distributions like Ubuntu).
