PuppEX Tahr (Tahrpup 6.0) with kernel 3.19.1-PAE-puppex

CruxNEWS 150309
A new version of PuppEX Tahr 32bit is ready. Kernel 3.19.1 is the latest available stable kernel from Kernel.org as of 150309. PuppEX uses the original Puppy Tahr Desktop. I have added PCManFM and LXTerminal. They are more useful than ROX-Filer respectively RXVT, I think. The ISO file is on the whole 475 MB, which is due to me including also NVIDIA Graphics driver 346.47, Gimp, Google Chrome (for Netflix), Adobe Flash and compiling tools. Tahrpup original is of only 199 MB. PuppEX is despite this still running as fast as the original, which means it runs very, very fast compared to most other Linux systems. (Puppy/PuppEX runs from RAM). I’ve also added Tahrpup’s Service Pack 6.0.2. With PAE compiled into the kernel PuppEX now can address up to 64GB of RAM.

Compatible with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
The beauty of Puppy Tahr 6.0 is that programs that are available for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS also can be easily installed and run in Puppy Tahr (and thus also in PuppEX).

PuppEX Tahr 32 bit with kernel 3.18.2-PAE-puppex

PuppEXPuppEX Tahr NEWS 150112
A new version of PuppEX Tahr Linux live cd 32 bit is ready. Most important changes: I’ve changed kernel from 3.14.20 to 3.18.2-PAE-puppex (latest) and installed NVIDIA Graphics driver 340.65. The Nvidia driver will be used if your computer/card is “modern” enough. I’ve also added Tahrpup’s Service Pack 6.0.1 and Google Chrome. Just to make it possible to watch Netflix movies. With PAE compiled into the kernel PuppEX now can address up to 64GB of RAM.

PuppEX Tahr is based on Puppy Linux Tahrpup 6.0.

A “review” of PuppEX Tahr

Puppy LinuxI simply must cite a member of Puppy Linux Forum 141201: This is astonishing – outstanding even, boots fast and absolutely fly’s on my old X60 Thinkpad. Lost for words to describe just how good this is. Anyone that want’s a real OS experience and more should try this. Still playing – looking better all the time.

My reply: Thanks for your kind words, but do you really mean that my remaster PuppEX Tahr is faster than the original system (Tahrpup 6.0)?

Member’s reply: Running puppy tahr 6ce now – nopae, as pae did not recognize Wlan. Very little between them booting, but considering your PuppEX has Gimp, VLC, the latest stable kernel and presumably additional tweaks / bits & bobs etc. Very impressive. Will play some more and see – both are exceptional.

Member‘s 2nd reply: Re-booted into PuppEX – so hard to be sure – but it does seem to be a little faster booting. Have mislaid my IWC timer (must get another quality timepiece). Perhaps the verbose mode (very informative) generates the illusion of greater activity = faster? Still very good, all things considered. More playing to do.

A new (perfect) 3.17.0 kernel for Puppy Linux

I don’t know how useful this info is for the average Puppy Linux user is, but today I have compiled a new perfect (as I think) 3.17.0 kernel for my PuppEX installed (not “frugal”) system. I call it 3.17.0-puppex.

The kernel can be used in all newer 32 bit Puppy Linux “fully” installed systems. I.e. not “frugal” systems.

DOWNLOAD (puppy-k317.zip)
md5sum

1. unzip puppy-k317.zip
2. Place vmlinuz in /boot
3. Create new folders 3.17.0-puppex and all-firmware in /lib/modules
4. Open the sfs files and copy the content to the folders 3.17.0-puppex respectively all-firmware
Done!

A new version of PuppEX (Puppy Linux) is ready!

Puppy LinuxPuppEX 14.1 5.6 32bit is a remaster of Puppy Linux Slacko 5.6, released on August 12, 2013. Kernel 3.10.5 is used. PuppEX uses the LXDE Desktop interface. Unlike the original Puppy Slacko 5.6, which uses JVM, Fvwm95 and IceWM as Desktop interface. PCManFM and LXTerminal are more useful ROX-Filer respectively RXVT, I think. The ISO file is on the whole 317 MB, which is due to me including LXDE and compiling tools (devx_slacko_5.6.0.sfs). Slacko 5.6 original is of only 165 MB. PuppEX is despite this still running as fast as the original, which means it runs very, very fast compared to most other Linux systems. (Puppy/PuppEX runs from RAM).

MOST IMPORTANT CHANGES
I’ve changed repositories from Slackware 14.0 to Slackware 14.1 and Slackware 14.1 “Salix“.

A new version of EXTON Linux MultibootCD 6-OS is ready!

A new version of EXTON Linux MultibootCD 6-OS is ready. Changes: New (latest) versions of Slax, Puppy Linux, 4MLinux, Tiny Core and SliTaz. I have replaced Parted Magic with GParted.

What’s the point of running EXTON Linux MultibootCD 6-OS?
Anyone who is slightly interested in Linux and want to see how far the development of the most famous mini Linux systems have reached should try it. Naturally, also all who own older 32 bit computers that require a smaller system, which can run smoothly (quickly). Easy then to test the current systems on the CD (DVD) live to find out which one suits you (and your computer) best.
